Sibiu Innovation Days 2025: Shaping the Future Through Collaboration and Emerging Technologies

6–7 November 2025

Now entering its sixth edition, Sibiu Innovation Days (SID 2025) continues to stand as a key landmark on Romania’s innovation map. What began six years ago as a regional initiative has grown into a national platform connecting academia, industry, and public administration in a shared mission: to drive digital transformation, foster applied research, and nurture collaborative innovation ecosystems.

A Turning Point for Innovation in Transylvania

Organized by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu (ULBS) through the Hasso Plattner Knowledge Transfer Institute (HPI-ULBS), together with Cluj IT and Sibiu IT Clusters, the 2025 edition marks a new stage in the conference’s evolution. Despite the end of support from the Hasso Plattner Foundation and the challenges facing Romania’s IT sector, the commitment to building a strong innovation culture remains unwavering. HPI-ULBS continues to serve as a strategic hub for regional innovation, connecting education and enterprise across southern Transylvania.

Conference Structure and Focus

The two-day event will feature four interactive components:

1. Panel Discussions – engaging debates on emerging technologies and societal impact;

2. Student Hackathon – stimulating creativity and practical problem-solving;

3. Student Innovation Session – showcasing prototypes and research projects;

4. Industrial Workshops – hands-on sessions for real-world applications.

Theme 2025: Emerging Technologies—Balancing Innovation, Risk, and Societal Impact

SID 2025 focuses on the technologies shaping tomorrow: Generative AI, Quantum Computing, and Sustainable Tech. These powerful innovations promise breakthroughs in productivity and quality of life but also raise profound ethical, environmental, and educational challenges.

  • Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are redefining learning and work while prompting questions about authorship, ethics, and intellectual property. The need for AI literacy, upskilling, and curriculum reform is greater than ever.

  • Quantum Computing is revolutionizing fields from healthcare to cybersecurity. Through national and EU initiatives like RONAQCI and Romania’s Quantum Technologies Strategy 2024–2029, the country aims to become a regional center of excellence in quantum applications.

  • Sustainable and energy-efficient computing underscores the urgency of a green digital transition, aligning with European projects such as RECODE-MLG and RIBES, which explore governance solutions for digital and environmental policy integration.

Education and Collaboration: The Foundation of Innovation

A strong message resonates throughout SID 2025: innovation thrives on collaboration. Romania, ranked last in the European Innovation Scoreboard 2024, must bridge the gap between education and industry through lifelong learning, co-creation, and international partnerships. ULBS, supported by initiatives like the Erasmus+ CoDEMO project, exemplifies this mission by promoting value co-creation and skill development for the future workplace.

SID 2025 is more than a conference—it is a collaborative movement shaping the innovation ecosystem of Sibiu and beyond. By bringing together researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and policymakers, it reinforces Sibiu’s role as an emerging innovation center in Romania.
